Golden Eggs

For a leadership class this semester we are reading the book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. At first I was not sure how I felt about this book, other than that I loved that I could get a textbook for $7 dollars at Half Price Bookstore (a HUGE weakness of mine). However, I have found this book so insightful and all the ideas are so basic and yet make so much sense.
One paradigm that is explained in the book is the Aesop fable. My mom used to read me Aseop's fables as a child, so again, this is basic, but adults can learn so much from it. This story in particular is the goose and golden egg. In the story this farmer has a goose who lays a golden egg and almost throws it away, but then decides to go and have it appraised. When he does that, he finds out that it's pure gold. The farmer goes every day and waits for the goose to lay the golden eggs. He becomes very, very rich. With the farmer's wealth also comes greed, and impatience. He becomes so impatient that he ends up killing the goose to get all the eggs. Instead, he finds that there are no eggs inside and now there is no way to get any more.
What we learn from this story is what do we value in effectiveness? Does effectiveness equal the more your produce, the more you do, the more effective you are?
Or is effectiveness measured by what is produced and the asset to produce more?
We cannot value only the egg (production) or we will soon be without the the asset that is capable of producing. We cannot value only the goose (asset) with no aim towards production because then you will not have the means to feed yourself or the goose.
True effectiveness is when we can find production between production and production capability.
In your effort to produce and do more, do not step over and "kill" those assets that assist you in producing.
These are just some of my thoughts, as I can tend to forget to value people in the mix of working several jobs, and juggle grad school. We all have things we need to produce, but do not forget those who help you, love you, and assist you in being effective. Value and invest in people on the way.
