Days 2- 5 on Daniel Fast

Well, as soon as I went back to subbing and interning, my time for blogging decreased immensely. Kirk and I have been doing well on the fast thus far - and only 4 more days to go (after today)!
I did not have temptation to eat to many things not on the fast - that is until I was surrounded with chocolate, cookies, and other things filled with sugar. When I was subbing and interning this week all those things were everywhere in the schools! Usually, I just eat things like that whenever I want, and so I had to remind myself several times that I cannot have that food. It taught me to be thankful for the food that I can eat.
We have discovered some seriously really delicious food that we plan to continue to make even after the fast - just we might add some cheese! ;)
We have experienced some wonderful and rich conversations throughout the past week that we have really missed for the past several months, maybe even a year or so. That has been the biggest blessing thus far during the fast.
I don't know if I have had spiritual revelations or anything throughout the fast - but there are times when I feel so excited and I have no idea why. My thought is that I am just excited for what God is going to do in 2012. I know He has wonderful plans for us, and I feel that He will bless us for being obedient and seeking Him. Our thought is that the beginning of every new year we will do the Daniel fast - to give our first fruits to the Lord every year, to give the year to Him and seek Him! Plus - what better time to do this fast than in January - tons of delicious fruits are in season!! :)
We are looking forward to the next 4 days to finish strong.... we are also looking forward to having coffee in the morning, dairy products, and sugar!

Day 1 Down!

Well Day 1 on the Daniel Fast was not so bad!
Probably helped that we were home all day and football was on.... and we were still able to eat Chipotle (brown rice, black beans, tomato salsa, lettuce, and guacamole) and it actually tasted pretty amazing still!
We are realizing that breakfasts are the most challenging since we have dairy of some sort every morning. Last night after making a delicious stir-fry for dinner I set out to make muffins for the next 2 mornings. These are not your typical muffins but they were pretty tasty with pineapple and orange peel in them!
This morning I have been working on making homemade crackers... much more difficult than it seems. Our poor food processor has almost had it with me after making 2 batches of crackers and hummus... yikes!
Yesterday I had a headache for most of the day, which is to be expected but I am not sure if it's from the detox process or if it's from the cold that I am still recovering from.
Today I feel very tired, but eating fruit seems to give me bursts of energy! My concern now is that I will be making food constantly at night and not have time for the Lord... which is the point of this 10 day fast. Hopefully I can get making all this food down pat and it will go more smoothly!

Update time!

Wow! I guess time got away from me in the past 9 months! Yikes!
Well, I have since quit my job at Heritage and now I substitute teach the days I am not interning at OOHS. Life is busy, so I guess that's why I don't blog much. Plus, it seems like life stays the same and our lives are not to adventurous... so maybe I should change the name of our blog. Plus we really aren't newlyweds anymore, we've been married almost 3 years now! How did that happen!
Anyways, I wanted to resurrected this blog as Kirk and I embark on a different kind of adventure.
Starting January 2 - 12 we will be participating in the Daniel Fast. The basis of the fast comes from Daniel chapters 1 and 10 where he ate only fruits and vegetables and only water to drink. I have been reading through the book and Daniel to prepare myself for these coming 10 days and have been amazed at all that God did through Daniel when he limited his food intake. So basically, we will eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts. I want to blog about our 1o days and let you all be a part of what we learn through this fast. We are excited to have a cleansing experience for our bodies, while also hearing from the Lord on several things and begin to rely on Him to sustain us through these 10 days.

That's all for now... stay tuned for more in 2012!!

Golden Eggs

For a leadership class this semester we are reading the book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. At first I was not sure how I felt about this book, other than that I loved that I could get a textbook for $7 dollars at Half Price Bookstore (a HUGE weakness of mine). However, I have found this book so insightful and all the ideas are so basic and yet make so much sense.
One paradigm that is explained in the book is the Aesop fable. My mom used to read me Aseop's fables as a child, so again, this is basic, but adults can learn so much from it. This story in particular is the goose and golden egg. In the story this farmer has a goose who lays a golden egg and almost throws it away, but then decides to go and have it appraised. When he does that, he finds out that it's pure gold. The farmer goes every day and waits for the goose to lay the golden eggs. He becomes very, very rich. With the farmer's wealth also comes greed, and impatience. He becomes so impatient that he ends up killing the goose to get all the eggs. Instead, he finds that there are no eggs inside and now there is no way to get any more.
What we learn from this story is what do we value in effectiveness? Does effectiveness equal the more your produce, the more you do, the more effective you are?
Or is effectiveness measured by what is produced and the asset to produce more?
We cannot value only the egg (production) or we will soon be without the the asset that is capable of producing. We cannot value only the goose (asset) with no aim towards production because then you will not have the means to feed yourself or the goose.
True effectiveness is when we can find production between production and production capability.
In your effort to produce and do more, do not step over and "kill" those assets that assist you in producing.
These are just some of my thoughts, as I can tend to forget to value people in the mix of working several jobs, and juggle grad school. We all have things we need to produce, but do not forget those who help you, love you, and assist you in being effective. Value and invest in people on the way.

Happy 2011

Happy 2011!!!
So... it's been awhile.
I guess grad school can do that to you. But, life has been good in the Fissel household. The biggest news we haven't posted about yet is that Kirk went to El Salvador with three other men from our church (Northchurch) over Thanksgiving weekend... he will need to write a blog post about that soon. But we are both very excited about what God is doing in El Salvador and look forward to this summer when hopefully BOTH of us will be going there together!
Tomorrow morning I am starting my Practicum/Internship tomorrow at Olentangy Orange High School. I am very excited with a little bit of nervousness too. I will be in the district for about a year and a half completing my 700 hours of Internship - yikes! I just can't believe how fast everything has gone - to think, a year ago I had not even gotten a phone call about my interview and now I am starting Internship. I will update as I can on life as an intern.
For now have a wonderful, happy, and blessed 2011!

Meet our Godson!

This past winter, our cousins Derek and Megan Rund asked us to be God parents for their second child. As soon as they asked, we were ecstatic! We could not wait to meet this new little baby and have continually prayed for this baby for months.
Well, Tuesday, September 21, 2010 Timon Paul Rund was born! He shares his birthday with his amazing mom! How cool is that?
When he was two days old we got to go and meet him. We are so in love with him and miss him already! He is a sweet baby boy that we feel so honored to have the privileged of praying for him and being a part of his life and his journey to knowing Jesus Christ.
We will see how long we can stand it before we go back down for another visit.
Enjoy some pictures of us meeting Timon (pronounced like Simon with a T)!
